Shear Forming
Shear forming is one of the oldest forms of metal spinning
It is the direct displacement of material from the horizontal blank line onto an angled surface. The simplest from of this would be a cone shear formed from a blank. The material is always pushed forward with no material being brought back again onto the spinning mandrill. In contrast, the material in the flow forming process is continuously brought back onto the spinning tool.
Because many materials work-harden, shear forming is an ideal process for these materials, as the material is formable in the short space of forming after which it has become brittle and would require annealing.
Funnels and cones can be shear formed in this manner.
There are many fundamentals that have to come together to achieve a perfect product. Luckily at Autoform CC we have many years of experience and are able to put this into the development of new products. Further with our range of automated spinning machines we are able to achieve high production runs with tight tolerances.
We have shear-formed a wide range of products from Ogives for military use, to funnels for laboratory equipment. Funnels/ cones for the automated filling machines are also produced using this process. Cones for the lighting industry is another product which has been formed using this process.
